Synopsis: Low Power Wide Area Networking (LPWAN) is quickly becoming one of the most disruptive forces in the burgeoning Internet of Things. The distinct advantage of LPWANs over incumbent industrial wireless sensor network (WSN) technologies is not just significantly increased range, but it is also about pushing end node complexity to the cloud.
LPWAN Web integration happens the second the node is turned on and its data shows up as actionable data on its network server. This is the default behavior for these LPWAN technologies and it greatly simplifies the development complexities of wireless sensor networking. Ten years ago when ON World published its first industrial WSN report, WSN was a disruptor of wired industrial sensing networks and from this came mesh standards such as WirelessHART, ISA100.11a and Wi-SUN. The challenges of wireless mesh sensor networking include long product development cycles, expensive gateways and advanced network management using technologies that were developed before the cloud was mature enough to create a business model around.
For this report, we surveyed over 100 of the leading industrial wireless sensing leaders and found that nearly one third are open to new wireless sensor networking technologies. LPWANs present an opportunity and threat to existing industrial WSN solution providers. In this report, we show the results of several in-house tests on LPWAN applications. We also interviewed dozens of the leading LPWAN developers to get their feedback on issues related to deployments, range, industrial building penetration and networking capabilities.
With nation-wide LPWANs rolling out worldwide and hundreds of companies already participating in initiatives and industry groups such as the LoRa Alliance, SigFox Partner Network, 3GPP Narrowband-IoT and GSMA's Mobile IoT, the opportunity is significant.
By 2025, there will be 440 million Internet-connected industrial wireless sensing and tracking devices worldwide. By this time, LPWANs will enable nearly 1 in 5 new industrial wireless applications that could not have existed before.
In this report, we analyze and forecast the LPWAN market opportunity for 35 industrial IoT market/application segments, evaluate 70+ companies with LPWAN-related products and services, present the findings of surveys with 100+ industrial IoT professionals, and show the findings from our network tests to illustrate the capabilities of LPWAN technologies.
